Veg Box Newsletter 19/5/17

Hi Folks,

It’s been a great week of sunshine and rain which was very much appreciated up at Left Field after an incredibly dry patch of weather. We’ve been pulling out the last of the purple sprouting broccoli and kale to clear the way for onions and leeks which will be going out very soon. In the polytunnel courgettes have been getting planted along with salads and French beans. Down in Rouken Glen our greenhouse tomatoes have been growing on really fast and putting out lots of flowers which should mean lots of our own tomatoes before too long. We’ve also just planted more tomatoes out in the polytunnel.

Unfortunately we have had an issue with fruit #1 this week… we don’t have any! We’ve had to resort to delivering you a £3 envelope in our veg box as a refund. We’re really sorry about this but had no other options. All other fruits are fine but you wont have #1!

May’s Munch of the Month competition is still open for entries. To enter just upload a photo of your creations to Twitter, Instagram or Facebook with the tags #locavoremm and #locavorevegbox.

This weeks boxes are further reflecting the change of season and the hunger gap. Root veg available from anywhere in the UK in now down to potatoes, carrots and beetroot but is being replaced by lovely fresh greens from our own farm along with organic tomatoes from the Isle of Wight and organic English asparagus. Unfortunately these items are much more expensive by weight so boxes will feel much lighter than they did through winter, though more exciting!

We’ve noticed some quality issues with carrots with some having a bit of pest damage. As a result we have given you all a little bit more to account for any waste. The hunger gap also means there are no onions in this weeks boxes or for the next month or so. Organic Dutch onions are however available through the Open Food Network if you can’t go without them.
