All Glasgow Apple Pie Making & Eating Contest – 22nd Oct 12-5pm

All Glasgow Apple Pie Making & Eating Contest

As part of Glasgow Apple Sunday on the 22nd of October, we’re pleased to inform you of the first All Glasgow Apple Pie Making & Eating Contest. Activities for Glasgow Apple Sunday will take place between 12-5 at Townhead Village Hall

Contestants are invited from across the greater Glasgow area to participate in two categories:

1) Pie Making

Entrants to this category are invited to enter apple pies of their own creation into the contest. All you need to do is bake a delicious pie and bring it along before 2pm on the day.

Rules:

The pies must be pies. Crumbles aren’t pies, strudels aren’t pies and cakes definitely aren’t pies.

The pies must be predominantly filled with apples (it is an apple pie contest). Pears aren’t apples, brambles aren’t apples and pineapples aren’t apples. You can have other things in there but it must be mostly apple..

Judging:

Pie’s will be judge by a panel of expert pie eaters with decades of experience between them. They will judge on the criteria of tastiness, local/sustainable sourcing of ingredients, presentation and a certain je ne sais quoi, magic or x factor.

2) Pie Eating

All entrants to the pie eating contest will be presented with an equally sized potion of apple pie. On commencement of the contest all contestants can begin eating pies. To make things more interesting the rules stipulate that cutlery will not be provided and hands cannot be used to aid in the eating of the pie. The contestant to finish their pie first, or consume most within a set time period wins. There is no need to register, just come along on the day.

Prizes:

The winners of both contests will win a Locavore Vegbox and a place in the hearts and minds of the people of Glasgow.

Entrants to the pie making contest can claim 10% off ingredients at the Locavore shop. Just let the team know you are one of the pie athletes.

What else is on:

Pie making and eating is just part of the days activities which are all about bringing people together to celebrate and preserve the fruit harvest! Everyone is invited to join us for this family friendly afternoon of activities, fun and skill-sharing in the lovely Townhead Vilage Hall and Orchard – a hidden gem in the centre of the city. There is a growing orchard movement in the city and this is your chance to make the most of your apple (and other fruit) harvest, meet like minded folk, speak to orchard experts, eat some tasty food and think about the possibilities for more community fruit growing in the future.

Here’s what will be happening on the day:

12-1 Apple Themed Sunday Lunch made by the Project Cafe.

1pm onwards – activities and workshops

Apple pressing with Locavore/Propagate: bring your apples for pressing into juice with a traditional rack and cloth press! work up your muscles and get some delicious fresh juice.

Orchard Skills with Scottish Fruit Trees. Come out to the orchard to learn how to care for your trees, find out which varieties that do well in Scotland and have a wee tipple of Glasgow’s one and only Clydecider.

Fizzy apple juice with Bottle of Ginger. Make naturally fermented (non-alcoholic) fizzy apple juice to take home with you.

Make your own jam/chutney – demonstration and workshop

Dehydrator demonstration – how to make your own dried apples and other fruit.

Childrens activites – Longest peel competition, games, more!

Discussion on “how to let Glasgow’s orchards flourish”. At the end of the day there will be a chance to think about how orchard interest groups across the city can make the most of their shared skills and resources. This will be run in an Open Space format so anyone can propose a topic of discussion.
