Veg Box Newsletter w/c 27.05.19

Hello Folks,

** Another reminder it’s BANK HOLIDAY WEEK. Wednesday Customers, your Veg Boxes will be delivered/available for collection on Thursday. Thursday/Friday Customers, your delivery day remains the same. Expect that we’ll be running about an hour behind on all collections and deliveries. **

Our wonderful Veg Box and Wholesale Co-ordinator, Kimberley, is sadly leaving the team this week. She’s a true Locavore all-rounder; from working in the shop, delivering veg boxes and harvesting on the farm, to heading up wholesale and keeping Veg Boxes running smoothly! We’re so thankful for her hard work, calm attitude and laughs over the past 2.5 years and wish her the best of luck on her new adventures.

Another big thank you to the customers who donate to the Good Food Fund. We use the donations to buy fruit and veg for independent charities working with people who live in food poverty. Unlike supermarkets, we don’t make a profit on your donations. In April 2019 we sent £1727.03 worth of fruit and veg to Auldhouse Community Foodbank, Central and West Integration Network, Gal Gael, Govan Community Project, Govanhill Community Canteen, The Marie Trust, Queen’s Park Govanhill Parish Church Foodbank with Club 170 and The Space (Govanhill).

The next event we have coming up is an Introduction to Feeding Your Microbes on Thursday 6th June. Run by Marie from Nutri Zone the 90 minute workshop will involve.

– Why a balanced diet is necessary
– What a balanced diet looks like
– Fermented foods and how they benefit a balanced diet
– What fermented foods Locavore has to offer
– Taster Session including water kefir, dairy kefir, kombucha and sauerkraut.

Marie is a Glasgow based Nutritional Therapist and a member of the British Association of Nutritional Therapists (BANT). She regularly works with Urban Roots and the NHS to deliver community based education on nutrition, healthy eating and cooking for people of all ages and backgrounds. Tickets are £15 (+BF) and can be purchased through the event page https://www.facebook.com/events/307611986804031/

How have you been enjoying the buttery little new potatoes? We think they’re a great change from the varieties we’ve seen all winter. We’ve got Charlotte New Potatoes this week and cucumbers in all the Veg Boxes. Some of you will also be seeing Red Batavia Lettuce from Organic Pantry and more leafy greens from our own growers. We learned recently that since Organic Pantry started to turn organic in 1999, they see all sorts of beautiful butterfly and bird varieties on their land that weren’t in the area before. Conventional farming does not promote diversity and you will usually only see one type of white butterfly – organic farming really is the way to protect our land and it’s ecosytems.

There are no Monthly Specials this week. We’ll be delivering meat boxes alongside our veg boxes next week. You can find more information about our monthly specials here, as well as their delivery schedule. If you’d like to add one to your order, drop us an email at subscribers@glasgowlocavore.org.

Check out storage guidance here for helpful tips and tricks on how to prolong the life of your fresh produce. If you’re wondering where your veg comes from, have a look at these maps. You can also join your fellow subscribers over in the Facebook group and check out our Veggiepedia!
