Bank Holiday Disruption: Wednesday Collections Moved to Thursday
If you usually collect your veg box on a Wednesday, for this week only you’ll need to collect on Thursday. This is because the bank holiday means we’ll get some of our deliveries of fresh produce later in the week than usual. If the change in schedule means you won’t be able to collect, please let us know as soon as possible.
The bank holiday also means that your veg box delivery could arrive later than usual. Things are taking a bit longer than usual at the moment anyway due to social distancing measures at Veg Box HQ, and the bank holiday will add to this. So please be patient with us, as some of our drivers may be out delivering late into the evening.
Mossgiel Milk Packaging
Those of you who subscribe to delicious milk from Mossgiel are probably already aware that there have been some changes to their packaging. The colour-coding of the bottle tops has now changed so that green and silver denotes whole milk while red and silver means semi-skimmed. They are also now sometimes using unbranded milk bottles to meet demand, which means we will be able to collect these again. Please remember to wash them out well before putting them out.
Due to a change in the way we pack eggs, we are no longer able to collect egg boxes. Cardboard egg boxes are useful for composting- look for a community garden near you that accepts food waste and see if they take egg boxes. You could also use your egg boxes as propagators for your windowsill garden, or explore the world of egg box crafts.

|What do you like to do with new potatoes? |
I like potato salads quite straightforwardly made with mayonnaise and red onion, but perhaps you prefer yours with boiled eggs, sour cream, and cornichons. Or so-called German potato salad, served warm with a vinaigrette and lots of crispy bacon. This vegan version uses fresh celery and peppers to lend crunchy contrast and a cashew-based dressing. And this one uses herbs, cornichons a vinaigrette and red onions to bring us all together!
But new potatoes aren’t just for salads. Their sweet, creamy flesh roasts up brilliantly, their thin skins crisping up. Their waxy texture makes them an excellent contender for potato pizza- I like this recipe but with plenty of parmesan involved for extra flavour (as-is it’s a great vegan pizza option). Similar is this new potato foccacia. And if you don’t fancy kneading, this no-knead foccacia is remarkably good and incredibly easy.
You can make a hash with new potatoes and chorizo to serve with salsa verde and poached eggs, or a savoury sort of tarte tatin with pomme rather than pomme de terre. You can crush them or curry them with chard and coconut milk. You can make a frittataor a galette.
I’ve written before about the diverse utility of potatoes, the delight their many uses bring. There is great joy to be had in boiling a potato; but that is the beginning not the end of the fun to be had.
