Hip hip hooray! Our farm is so productive this week that you’ll notice extra cooking greens in your veg boxes. This is a free bonus and a perk of the peak season. As difficult as eating seasonally and locally can be, these are the times of splendid plenty, so be sure to enjoy an extra green week! What’s more, everything in the veg boxes this week is UK-grown, and most of it is from Scotland. There’s lots from our own busy flourishing farm, including those spring onions and fresh garlic.
We’re also offering bags of kale on the Online Veg Box Shop this week, so if you’d like to boost your veg box, or store up for less green months, now is the time to do so. Also new on the Online shop is Locavore coconut oil, a cupboard- and haircare- essential.
egg supplier is experiencing some shortages of eggs, and isn’t
currently reliably able to fulfil our standing order of eggs each week.
If you subscribe to eggs this may mean you miss a box or two over the
next few months. We’ll always be in touch beforehand to let you know as
early as possible, and will of course make sure you aren’t charged for
any missing eggs.
The supplier is also having trouble sourcing cardboard egg boxes due to the pandemic, so is currently using recycled plastic egg boxes for some orders. They know, as do we, that avoiding single-use-plastic packaging whereever possible is really important, so this is a last resort and not something we’re changing to on a permanent basis. If you’d like to pause your eggs for a few weeks until these supply issues are solved, just send us an email and we can sort that out for you.
If you collect your veg box from the shop, you’ve probably noticed that we’ve been storing some of the delicate leafy green veg in a chiller instead of in your veg box. This is just to keep it in tip-top condition even on the warmest days. Please make sure to consult the posters up in-store and add any chilled items to your box as needed.

The Nice Bit
|We get sprouting, or tenderstem, broccoli a little later in Scotland than they do down south. But though some early Spring recipes might not seem particularly suited to July, with a rainy July like this it’s not so bad. After a good damp walk in your local park, you might just need a bowl of orichette with cream and broccoli, or this creamless variation on the theme. Another of Nigel Slater’s suggestions, a stir fry of lamb mince and broccoli (well seasoned with nam pla and plenty of coriander), might be just the ticket at the end of a dull grey day. Even more warming is a cheesy gratin that also incorporates some of the kale from our farm. |
If your broccoli is destined to be a side dish, rather than the centre of attention, there’s no need to sell it short. As delicious as it is simple steamed or boiled briefly enough to retain crunch, it also roasts up a treat- try it with preserved lemon and feta, or with parmesan. Finally, there’s no end of ways to dress broccoli appealingly. As simply as butter, as elaborately as hollandaise- or sesame, tahini, or ponzu based dressings will also do nicely.
