Veg Box Newsletter 23rd August: Glasgow Glory

The Veg Box Online Shop is Now Open!

The Online Veg Box Shop is open for deliveries next week!

Ghee is the difference between a pretty good dal and an excellent dal. It’s the difference between pretty good popcorn and excellent popcorn. It’s flavoursome and the Happy Butter ghee especially so- as it’s made in small batches, it retains that rich brown-butter flavour. Vital for Indian cooking, but also versatile and useful for all your culinary ventures.

As always, the Online Veg Box Shop is fully stocked with tinned essentials, dry goods, cleaning supplies, fresh bread, tofu, produce, and much more.

The deadline to get your orders in is 11pm Monday

The Nice Bit

This week we are delighted to announce that once again the majority of the veg in your boxes comes direct from one of our own growing sites! Thats either our lush and productive farm at Neilston, or our newer site at Bellahouston, the home of our flower growers and veg box team.

That means that every single cucumber, tomato and French bean, and every last leaf of salad, kale, chard and spinach has been sown, grown and harvested right here in Glasgow!

I adore this time of year, where summer slowly starts to give way to days that are a little cooler. We are at the peak of the glut of beautiful tomatoes, leafy greens and enjoying fresh, summery recipes, but in a few short weeks we’ll be craving heartier food.

For now, lets enjoy home made salsa, roasted tomato ragu and Caprese salad, delicious fresh cucumber sliced thinly on cheese sandwiches, chard wilted with fresh garlic and lemon zest.

As the days cool, we can enjoy a warming kale and bean soup, knowing that soon it will be time to properly celebrate the return of autumn. And with it, will come all the vegetables that we haven’t enjoyed for a whole year.

Plums and mangoes are the highlight of the fruit bags this week. I dream of mango cheesecake, coulis and chilled smoothies. And perhaps a rich, spiced plum crumble on a chillier evening. Let us know what you make with your box this week, by tagging us on social media with #locavore!
