Covid-19 Updates

You can read our company-wide pandemic statement here, and our biggest Veg Boxes update here. Please keep an eye on the newsletter for any further changes.

Mossgiel Milk: Unbranded Bottles and Bottletop Change

Mossgiel are now using unbranded milk bottles for some of their milk, and accepting these back, so we will now resume collecting unbranded milk bottles, alongside the branded Mossgiel ones.

They’ve also changed their bottle tops. While previously, solid blue was whole milk and solid green semi-skimmed, it will now be green and silver for whole milk and red and silver for semi-skimmed. The milk in the bottles is as good as ever, it’s just a small packaging change.

We Are No Longer Collecting Egg Boxes

We are no longer able to collect egg boxes, due to a change in how we manage eggs. Cardboard egg boxes are useful for composting- look for a community garden near you that accepts food waste and see if they take egg boxes. You could also use your egg boxes as propagators for your windowsill garden, or explore the world of egg box crafts.

The Nice Bit: Spring Greens

As if by magic, it’s greener every week. We have leeks and watercress and spring greens and lettuce and kale and chard. There’s asparagus and parsley and pak choi and cucumbers. This is the sort of leafy splendour we look forward to all winter. There are salads on the table, and stir fries, and steamed things. Will you grill your asparagus on a barbeque (if you have the garden space), or use it in a salad, a tart, or a green risotto? Nigel Slater piles his boiled asparagus with smokey diced pancetta and Parmesan, finishing the combination in the oven for a perfect combination. Meera Sodha lightly spices all the good green things of the season with turmeric and coriander. You can easily do something similar with spring greens, or anoint them with lemon juice and butter or olive oil for a light side dish.

In the fruit bags, we’ve got a week without rhubarb- which will be good news to some of you and very bad news to others. It’ll be back, but in the meantime, oranges, apples, and kiwi suggest fruit salads while bananas demand to be baked into quickbreads or churned into a simple ice-cream. Berries from Europe meanwhile hint at what’s to come- there will only be better things as Spring moves on and Summer begins to beckon from just beyond the horizon.

Surveys

As you may have already seen on our social media channels, we are currently running an additional survey about the Covid-19 lockdown and our response to it. The survey is running as part of our Locavore Impacts project  and aims to find out more about the impact of the lockdown on our customers, as well as thoughts on how we have responded and suggestions for how else we might be able to help. If you have time to give us your thoughts and feedback you can find the survey here.

If this gets you in the mood for something more substantial, the main customer survey is still open and available here  with a chance to win £20 in Locavore vouchers as a thank you taking part.

Good Food Fund

A huge thank you to everyone for all your donations to our Good Food Fund. You can read about what we’ve been using your generous donations for here (scroll down to the Good Food Fund Section). Your help is always much appreciated, but especially at this difficult time, in which the vulnerable are worse effected and food inequality exacerbated.

If you are in a position to do so, please consider donating to the Good Food Fund. You can donate by subscription- weekly, fortnightly, or monthly- by emailing us. Or you can add a one-time donation to your Online Veg Box Shop- look for it at the top of the page.
