Contactless Deliveries

Cases of Covid-19 are, sadly, on the rise in Scotland. As such we will continue to do out part to keep all our wonderful staff and customers safe. This means we’ll be continuting to practise contactless deliveries, so please keep half an ear out for your veg box on your delivery day. Remember that if you’re worried about the box being left on your doorstep, you can always leave a large plastic box for veg, milk, eggs, and whatnot to be left in to keep it sheltered and hidden.

We’re also sorry to say we won’t be able to reintroduce our opt-out lists any time soon. We know you’re missing them- we are too. Unfortunately, they require a full staff in our packing shed, which would make socially distanced working for our packers impossible. We’re looking at ways to adapt for the future, but for the next month or two at least I’m afraid opt-out lists will still be suspended.

Chilled Items for Collections

If you collect your veg box from our Victoria Road shop, please be sure to grab the chilled items from our fridge. There will be posters up in the shop to let you know what to look for, and you can always ask the staff in the shop to help if you’re having trouble finding something.

The Nice Bit

Our veg boxes continue to reflect the changing season, and this week I’m most excited for the sweetcorn. Glasgow in September can sometimes be less rainy and grey than the summer proper. Although the days are cooler, they are also often bright, with golden light that makes the sandstone tenements glow the same warm colour as the leaves blowing along the pavement. Sweetcorn is kind of like that: when it’s here, you know it’s autumn, but it’s so bright, and so sweet, and so buttery. Perhaps they ought to call it bitter-sweet corn, as there’s something sad about the end of summer no matter how much you love autumn (and no-one loves it more than me).

Sweetcorn is wonderful cooked simply- grilled or steamed or boiled or roasted or microwaved- with butter (or the vegan butter we offer on the Online Veg Box Shop, which gets rave reviews!). But at Locavore we always think it’s worth looking beyond the simple preparation, however wonderful it may be. This corn coconut soup  sounds like a perfect September dinner, flavourful and warming but still fresh. Elote (also known as “Mexican Street Corn” after the country it’s from, the setting it’s often eaten in, and the vegetable it is) is an incredibly delicious way to celebrate corn with dairy products and chilli powder- here’s a recipe, you can sub feta for the harder-to-find cojita. If you have a cob of corn and a few tins of beans, you’re on your way to eating Cowboy Caviar for dinner. This is something between a salad and a dip, and, as well as boasting a very charming name, is vegan, full of veg, customisable, and darn tasty, pardner.
